Georgia Spaulding Obituary

Georgia M. Spaulding, 87, departed this life on Sunday September 22, 2019 at her home in Columbus, OH, with her daughter at her side. Georgia was born September 3, 1932 in Cape Girardeau, MO.

Georgia retired as a nurse’s aide after 28 years of service at Ohio State University Hospital. After retirement, for over 15 years, Georgia opened her home providing in home childcare.  Many of those children who are now adults, still affectionately called her MawMaw.

Georgia was a faithful member of Mt. Vernon Avenue African Methodist Episcopal Church (A.M.E.C) for 45 years. At Mt. Vernon Avenue A.M.E.C., she served in various roles and assumed many responsibilities: Church School Teacher, Vacation Bible School Support Staff, Scholarship Committee, Stewardess Board, Steward Board, Media Ministry, Hospitality Committee, African American Grand March, Political Action Committee, Class Leader and member of the Essie Hamilton Missionary serving as president for eight years. One of Georgia’s greatest joys was serving as Pastor Steward for over 25 years.  

Georgia previously held the office of Worship Leader on both the conference and district levels of the Women’s Missionary Society. In 2016, Georgia became a Life Member of the Connectional Women’s Missionary Society.  This honor was one of Georgia’s greatest achievements. 

Georgia was preceded in death by husband of 45 years O’Neal Spaulding, her parents Oliver Johnson, Sr. and Irene Hughes Jonson, brothers James Palmer, Oliver Johnson, Jr., Ronald Johnson, Kenneth Johnson, and William Johnson, sisters: Talitha Sanders, and Janet Lee Lindsey,

Georgia leaves to cherish her memory one precious daughter Rev. Evelyn Flewellen and son in law James Flewellen, grandaugher Tiffany (Albert) Smith, Jr., great grandsons Phillip (PJ) Jemison, Albert (AJ) Smith, III, and “bonus” daughter, Emma Flewellen, sister Mary Bracey, Detroit, MI, brother Michael Johnson, Toledo, OH, and a host of extended family members; children, grandchildren, and church family.

Georgia loved the Lord and His work and was always found busy working in His vineyard.  Her favorite scriptures were Psalm 23 and II Timothy 4:6-8.

Family will receive friends Saturday, September 28, 2019, from 1:00pm until time of service at 2:00pm at Mt. Vernon AME Church, 1127 Mt Vernon Ave, Columbus, OH 43203.
