John "Slake" Slacum entered this world on Tuesday, January 30, 1934 in East New Market, MD and departed Sunday, September 8, 2019. Preceded in death by parents Rev. Albert and Hattie Slacum, wife of over 50 years Jessie, son Terry and sisters Louise, Helen and Frances. Survived by sons John "Freddie" Slacum and Chester "Chuckie" Murray, daughters Jessie "Renee" Keyes and Chante Slacum all of Columbus, OH, daughter Sandra (Lewis) Barnett, Easton, MD, sisters Mary Jenkins, Hurlock, MD and Lillian Slacum, East New Market, MD, special nephew Earl (Rachael) Slacum, Severn, MD and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.
John served in the United States Air Force and retired from the Ohio Department of Liquor Control after 30 years where he was the Deputy Director for Purchasing. He was a founding member of Mt. Gerizim Baptist Church where his duties included the Deacon Board, Chairman Trustee Board, Sunday School Superintendent and Male School Over-seer. John enjoyed working crossword puzzles and reading The Columbus Dispatch for over 50 years. His famous words were "If you want to have a great life follow your brother Jesus' instructions while he was here on earth, this way you get to meet your heavenly father for eternity." Family will receive friends Monday September 16, 2019 from 10:00am until time of service at 11:00am at the Chapel of White's. Interment Eastlawn Cemetery, 1340 Woodland Avenue, Columbus, Ohio 43219.
