Joyce Holmes Obituary

Joyce Ann Wimbley Holmes was born May 7, 1943 to Geneva Griffin and Irving Wimbley Jr. in Columbus, Ohio.  She was raised in Poindexter Village and participated in many community activities.

Joyce was baptized in Jesus name at the Church of Christ of the Apostolic Faith then located at the corner of Collins and Pennsylvania. She attended Columbus public schools and graduated from Central High School. After graduation, she worked as a receptionist at Children’s Hospital. Her experience working in a hospital environment inspired her to enroll in the radiology program at Mt.Sinai Hospital in Cleveland, OH. She began working at Kaiser Permanente and remained there until retirement 36 years later to spend more time with family and friends.  On May 11, 1983, Joyce married Wallace Holmes Jr. They were married for 34 years. In 1984, Joyce returned to school to earn her Bachelor’s degree in Radiology from Hiram College. When she and Wallace moved to Huntsburg, OH,

Joyce became an active member of the Claridon Congregational Church. She also became a member in good standing of the Chardon Garden Club. She was an avid gardener and maintained beautiful raised flower beds throughout her 10-acre property. Joyce was a gourmet cook at heart. She especially enjoyed baking and making candy. For 3 years, she was employed part-time as a cook at Hein’s in south Euclid, OH. She also worked at the Cleveland Credit Bureau. Joyce enjoyed crafts of all types including scrapbooking. Her keen eye for color and home décor inspired her to start a home based business called Basket Boutique. She and her sister Yvonne traveled around Ohio selling decorative baskets at art shows and community festivals. That said, anyone that knew Joyce well would agree that her all-time favorite hobbies were shopping, shopping, and more shopping! Her stores of choice were T J Max, Marshalls, and of course Target!

Joyce and Wallace enjoyed entertaining family and friends at their home for cookouts and camping. It became a family tradition for summer holidays. Wallace was quite the grill master while Joyce reveled in preparing sumptuous side dishes and desserts to the delight of her guests! Throughout her life, Joyce exhibited a tremendous allegiance to her family. This was clearly manifested in the dedication to her mother after retiring. Countless times, she made the long drive between Cleveland and Columbus to help with her mom’s care. She made sure her mother made it out to church every Sunday. Joyce returned to her spiritual roots and joined her mom becoming a member of Grace Apostolic Church. She departed this life June 19, 2019.
