Shirley E. Smith was born on January 6, 1936 in Cedartown, Georgia to Walter and Mildred Barton. She departed this life on Wednesday, November 6, 2019 at Capital City Gardens Rehabilitation and Long Term Care Facility after a lengthy illness.
In 1954 in Cedartown, Georgia, Shirley Barton and Jack Hoxie welcomed a daughter, Jacqueline Barton to this world. The following year in 1955, their son, Derrick Barton was born. Shirley moved to Columbus in 1967 and began working for Federal Glass and served as the first black female foreman in the company. When Federal Glass closed its doors in 1979, Shirley went to work for the T. Marzetti Company until 1989 when she began working for Jacobson’s Department Store in the City Center Mall in downtown Columbus. When Jacobson’s closed its doors, Shirley retired and began traveling with her buddy, Sue Kemp. Shirley enjoyed staying busy which led her to accept a part-time position with the Ohio State University football stadium. She truly looked forward to the home games where she would connect with the fans. The quest for God’s Word, led Shirley to join Church of Christ of the Apostolic Faith, where she had been a faithful member since 1966.
Shirley lived life to the fullest and credited the Lord for her blessings. Helping others, bargain shopping, traveling and attending church services were some of the few activities Shirley enjoyed. She also enjoyed telling others what to do and was affectionately known as “security” at the church.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Ron Smith; parents, Walter and Mildred Barton; daughter, Jacqueline Barton; brother, Fred Barton; grandson, Derrick Barton, Jr. She leaves to cherish her memory one son, Derrick Barton, Sr.; grandson, Raymond Barton; six great grandchildren; niece, Stephanie Barton and a host of friends.
