Viola Maxine Hurt Winston-Downs was born in East Gulf, WV on September 20, 1931 to Esther Craighead and Johnny Hurt. She departed this life on Saturday, December 7, 2019.
She received her early education in the public school system of West Virginia. She also completed training to become a Licensed Practical Nurse. She was employed with Mount Carmel and Riverside Hospitals. She retired as a Social Service Specialist for Family Counseling and Crittenton Services, Inc.
She was united in marriage to the late Bernard Winston. From this union, five children were born. Three of their children, Linda, Terrie and Theodore preceded her in death. Later in life, she married James Downs, Sr. who also preceded her in death.
Maxine was a long-time resident of Bexley Heritage Place, where she volunteer at the front desk. She was a lifelong disciple of the Trinity Baptist Church where she was active in several ministries. She loved to travel and was a member of the Order of Eastern Star.
In addition to her parents, three children, and husbands she is preceded in death brothers, Kemper, Donald, Leon and Johnny Craighead and June Hunt. Cherishing her smile and kiss are daughters and sons-in-law; LaVerne and Howard Morris and Teresa and Edward McConnell; thirteen grandchildren; thirty-two great grandchildren; thirteen great-great grandchildren; five brothers and two sisters-in-law; Otha and Hester Craighead, Detroit, MI; Leroy and Maria Craighead, Roselle, NJ, Thomas and Michael Craighead, Columbus, OH and Timothy Craighead, Beckley, WV; several nieces, nephews, and family members, the Downs and Davis Families, and the Trinity Baptist Church family.
Memorial Service Saturday, December 14, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. Family will receive friends at 1:00 p.m. at Trinity Baptist Church, 461 St. Clair Avenue, Columbus, OH 43203
