Bertha L. Powell age 92, passed away unexpectantly on Saturday March 2, 2024.  She was born on June 22, 1931, to Charlie Bullock and Rosalee Smothers in Boligee Alabama. 

Bertha was the oldest of seven and graduated from Hamtramck high school in Detroit MI.  She was preceded in death by her mother Rosalee at a young age and then took on a leadership role and caregiver to all her siblings.

Bertha met and married her husband, George W. Powell Sr., on May 4, 1949. They lived together in a joyful union and was blessed by God with 7 children.

Bertha was an avid traveler going with her social group “Ladies of Essence” and the “Seasoned Citizens of New Salem” and many trips with her daughters.  She was a great co-pilot when traveling enjoying story telling keeping the driver alert and engaged. Bertha was also an avid reader.  She served New Salem as a faithful servant.
