Charles R. Almon, passed away peacefully at The Monterey Rehabilitation Center on Tuesday, December 18, 2018. He was born on May 21, 1945 in Ravenna, Ohio. He is preceded in death by his parents, LC and Liddie B. Almon and a brother Larry J. (LA) Almon. He is survived by sister Pastor Katherine Valentine; brothers Jay L. (Sally) and Rosco B. Almon; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Charles was a talented pianist and artist. In his early youth he played piano in his family gospel group "The Almonaires" with his mother, sister and brothers, and also was the pianist for the Second Shiloh Baptist Church. He graduated from Marion Franklin High School in 1964 and was drafted and served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam. While in the service in Vietnam, he was a chauffeur for his Colonel and participated in the service band called "The Black Caps" that entertained the troops. While entertaining the troops a helicopter he was flying into an engagement was shot down and he survived with no injuries.
After his discharge from the service he played in a band in Boston, Massachusetts with the same servicemen called "The Everyday People". He loved tennis and basketball. He retired from the OSU custodial department. After his return to Columbus in the mid 1970s he became the pianist for the church pastored by his father, Rev. LC Almon. He continued to play piano after he suffered a stroke that paralyzed his left side, even with only his right hand he was still a talented pianist. He will be missed.
