Mr. Charles Lee James, lovingly known as Charles, Uncle Chuck, and Poppy, was born on February 10, 1931, in Columbus, Ohio, to Mary Kathryn and Hammon L. James. He grew up in Poindexter Village alongside his sister, Bettye James, and attended Columbus Public Schools, graduating from Columbus East High School. A gifted athlete, Charles enjoyed tennis and became an exceptional table tennis player at the Beatty Recreation Center. He proudly served in the United States Air Force, receiving an Honorable Discharge. As a proud veteran, one of the highlights of his later years was participating in the Veterans Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. in 2024, where he was honored for his service.
In 1955, Charles married the love of his life, Rosalee Burton Montgomery ("Rose"), and together they raised her two daughters, Josephine Montgomery Thompson and Constance Montgomery (Dennis) Gullick. Their 46-year marriage was filled with devotion until her passing in 2004.
Charles devoted more than thirty years of service to the Ohio Civil Rights Commission. He coached little league football, enjoyed boating on his cherished boat named "Rose", camping, and spending time with his grandchildren.
Known for his legendary ribs and chicken wings, he was also a die-hard Ohio State Buckeye fan who attended every game and tailgated with Rose until his health prevented him from attending.
A devoted member of First Church of God, Charles served as a greeter and on the security team alongside his brother-in-law, James A. Burton Sr.
After a long and blessed life, Charles transitioned on November 24, 2025, following a brief illness. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Kathryn and Hammon James; sister, Bettye; daughter, Constance; and beloved wife, Rose.
He leaves to cherish his memory: daughter Josephine Thompson; nephew Derrick James; cousin Dickie (Mary) James; grandchildren Joe (Kim) Thompson, TracieThompson, Dennis (Kim) Gullick, and Stacey (Melvin) Smith; many great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and lifelong friends.
