Derrick A. Helms

Family will receive friends on Thursday, August 10, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. until time of service at 11:00 a.m. at Grace Apostolic Church, 1743 E. Lakeview Avenue, Columbus, OH 43224. Interment: Greenlawn Cemetery.

Mr. Derrick Anthony Helms was born July 22, 1959 – Sunset July 28, 2023. Now with his loved ones. Father and Mother, Leroy and Bernice Helms. Grandmother’s Bernice Peterson and Etta Mae Helms, Grandfather’s Cecil Brewer, Sr. and Dudley Helms, Brother’s Ricky Brewer, Ronald, Andre and Gregory Helms, Aunts Vera Brewer Hayes, Gloria Brewer, Gloria Owens, Ida and Mary Frances Helms, Uncles Cecil Brewer Jr., and Nate (Jerry) Helms.

Left to cherish his legacy, his only daughter Danashia Helms, and three grandchildren, only sister Etta B. Helms/Care taker, remaining brother Kenneth (Annett) Helms, uncles Jimmy Helms of London, England, Joe Franklin Brewer of Baltimore, Maryland, Samuel Leaf of Columbus, Ohio and only nephew Stan Helms, nieces Kenyanna Spotts, Bernice Potter, Savanah and Bernice Helms.

Derrick graduated from East High School on June 11, 1978. He was a certified welder, head cook, head custodian, and tutor for inmates with reading difficulties. He was very generous, helping any and everyone he could, always had jokes, and told it like he saw it, raising hell to be heard!

Baptized with the Holy Ghost under the Leadership of Elder Earnest Hardy, at his former church, The Church of Christ of the Apostolic Faith. Brother Derrick became a member at Grace Apostolic Church in February 2003, until his health caused his absence.

Derrick loved music, old school mainly but first and foremost Gospel.

“For now, I am gone. Live your life loving and always trust in the Lord because He is good. Love you all”.
