Donald Dewayne Bondurant, a cherished member or the Columbus community was born on June 5, 1947, to Alexander "Sonny" and Thelma Bondurant. On June 3, 2024, he peacefully departed this world after bravely battling a long illness caused by Diabetes.
Donald's journey began at Refuge Baptist Church, where he was baptized at an early age, In his youth, he displayed his athleticism on the football field as a receiver for the Sullivan Garden Terriers, guided by Coach Ray Powell. Known for his infectious sense of humor, Donald found joy in the pages of Marvel Comics and the thrill of Godzilla and King Kong movies. Affectionately called "Lefty," "Dennis the Menace," and "Eagle Eye" by those who knew him best, Donald was a dedicated fan of The Ohio State Buckeyes, Los Angeles Lakers, and Cleveland Browns, fervently supporting his teams through victories and defeats.
Beyond sports, Donald's passion for pool became legendary throughout the city, spanning over 50 years of friendly competition and camaraderie. A skilled cook, he delighted in preparing meals for his loved ones, sharing not only his culinary talents but also his generous spirit. His loyalty extended beyond the sports arena and kitchen, as he faithfully followed The Young and the Restless for over five decades.
Donald's impact reached far beyond his hobbies and interests. Serving as a mentor and father figure, he earned endearing titles like Uncle, Dad, and Grandpa from the many young people whose lives he touched. His dedication to community extended to his role as a Board member and President of his condo association, where he worked tirelessly to improve the lives of his neighbors.
Educated at Central High School, Donald pursued his passion for social work, earning an Associate's degree from Columbus State Community College in 1980, and a Bachelor's degree from Ohio Dominion University in 2002. He dedicated years of service to the State of Ohio Department of Administrative Youth Services, retiring in 2013.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents, Alexander "Sonny" and Thelma Bondurant, his sister Thelma Catron, and his brother Walter Bondurant. He is survived by his aunt, Rosetta Hall; sister, Evelyn Johnson; niece, and devoted caregiver, Kimberly Johnson; nephews Brandon Catron, Terry Johnson, and Timmy (Ida) Johnson; special great-niece, Lauren (Nathan) Saunders; great-nephew, Jerrod Johnson; great-nieces Brandy (Maurice) Wells and Janae Collick; cherished cousins Walter (Renee) Russell, Larry (Brenda) Green, Michael Russell, and Patricia (Jackie) Smith. He also leaves behind longtime special friends Sue Jackson, Minnie Thomas, Mary McBride, and their families, as well as a host of other relatives, friends, and colleagues.
Donald DeWayne Bondurant will be remembered for his kindness, humor, and unwavering support for his loved ones and community. His legacy of compassion and camaraderie will continue to inspire all those who were fortunate enough to know him.
