Family will receive friends on Friday, February 16, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. until time of service at 12:00 p.m. at White's Funeral and Cremation Services, 867 S. James Road, Columbus, OH 43227. Interment: Glen Rest Memorial Gardens.
Artist, musician, father, friend, brother, companion and uniquely beautiful soul Douglas Avery Simpson impacted countless hearts with a profoundly peaceful rhythm that will continue to emanate far beyond the 65 years in which he graced this earth. Douglas, lovingly known to many as “Dougie” & “Simma”, transitioned on the morning of January 27, 2024 due to consequences of aspiration pneumonia & myeloid sarcoma; yet even as his tangible components declined, his spirit remained as insurmountable as ever.
Douglas was born in Brooklyn, New York on April 20, 1958 to exceptional parents Fitzroy and Merle Simpson whose indelible wisdom flowed through him for the entirety of his days. Douglas’s outstanding inclination to the arts would reveal itself as early as the age of 5 in the form of visual works such as portraits & landscapes that far exceeded his years, as well as, a performers charisma that would later manifest into a passion for which he would become so admirably known.
He later relocated to Columbus, Ohio where he would attend The Ohio State University and The Columbus College of Art & Design earning a bachelor’s degree in fine arts. Douglas would then go on to become a renowned reggae vocalist, songwriter, producer and performer sonically captivating an innumerable amount people alongside his many brothers/sisters in rhythm from Faith Band, The Flex Crew, KMA, The Ark band and more throughout his wonderful career that spanned 40+ years.
Douglas is survived by his son Douglas S.J. Simpson & his son’s mother Eunice Givens-Smith, companion Rhonda Slaughter-Reed, sibling Gloria Reuben, cousin's Marlienne Christian and family, Sharon Simpson-Anderson & family, Derek Williams & family, Adam Christian & family, Donna Christensen & family, Yolanda Woodson & family as well as his brothers/sisters in rhythm whom all love him eternally.
He was preceded in death by his parents Fitzroy & Merle Simpson, grandmother Elena Christian, brother Denis Simpson, Uncle Lenny and companion Maria Coles.
The inevitable notes of sorrow that one typically feels when faced with the reality of bidding farewell to the physical body of such a monumental part of themselves are present, yet drastically overshadowed by the overwhelming feelings of joy and gratitude that he existed.
