Bishop Dr. Victor Lee McKoy, 67, transitioned to Glory on October 11, 2024, in Pickerington, Ohio.
Born on September 22, 1957 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Victor was the oldest child born to Mildred (née McDougald, previously McKoy) Goldston and Carl Lee McKoy. A man of calm and quiet demeanor, Victor was cherished by all who knew him.
As a young boy he had a passion for knowledge. This propelled him through Central High School in Grand Rapids, Michigan and later to higher education at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan earning a Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Science. He then pursued his passion for dentistry, attending The Ohio State University College of Dentistry in 1981.
Officially becoming Dr. McKoy in June 1985, Victor actively practiced as a dentist in several dental offices in Columbus, Ohio and in Springfield, Ohio before he started his own dental practice. He opened up McKoy Dental Center in 1987. Located on the corner of Livingston and Oakwood in Columbus, Ohio, thousands would come through the office for a dental visit or just a good word from “Doc” as he was lovingly called. Victor was known for his compassionate care and dedication to his patients. Many patients rejoiced in his anointed hands that allowed them to feel no pain while sitting in his dental chair. Victor was beloved by his patients due to his overflowing generosity with his time and services which he used to glorify the Lord.
His professional accolades include being a member of the Columbus Association of Dentists including serving as Treasurer and President at various points. Victor was also featured in Who's Who in Black Columbus in 2009.
Victor also maintained a keen interest in health and wellness, staying informed and knowledgeable on all aspects of health. He was instrumental in starting the African American Male Wellness Walk, an event that highlights the importance of health in the black community. He continued to share his health expertise as a weekly radio host on "Let's Talk About Health" every Saturday morning on AM1580 The Praise WVKO.
Victor was blessed with the gift of ministry. Being a 4th generation preacher, he was very comfortable in the area of giving God's word and encouraging others. While not gifted with the same musical talents as others in the McKoy and McDougald families, he still used the power of his voice to bless others. He ministered to the whole body, both the spiritual and the physical. Giving a word of prayer, and standing in faith, he also encouraged people to follow their dreams. His spiritual life was deeply rooted in his community. Victor was a long-time member of The Church of Christ of the Apostolic Faith and later founded the Tabernacle of Jesus Christ in 1994, where he was actively involved in mentoring and outreach.
His hobbies included mentoring future dentists, reading the Bible, and his love for talking about and driving fast cars. He also loved old school gospel music. Victor's life was a testament to his love for bringing people closer to Christ and promoting health.
Victor was preceded in death by his father, Carl Lee McKoy, brother Kenneth McKoy, and sister Tandra McKoy.
Victor is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Connie (née Moss) McKoy; children, Victoria (Phillip) Griffin, Vanessa (Dr. Collin) Richardson, and Vaughn (Eryn) McKoy. He was a proud grandfather (“G-Daddy”) to Simone Griffin, Camille Griffin, Connor McKoy, Ellington Richardson, and Coretta Richardson. He was a caring son to Mildred (née McDougald, previously McKoy) Goldston and stepfather Charlie Goldston. His legacy also lives on through his siblings, Cynthia (Raymond) McKoy-Collier, Gregory McKoy, Darryll McKoy, Equilla (Willie) McKoy Lipsey, Cedric (Zandra) McKoy, and Carlton (Bernice) McKoy, along with many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Lifelong friends are Linda Martin, Bishop Gregory Irvin, Dr. Glenn T. Walter, Dr. Mark White, Malcolm Tanksley, and Pastor Juan Woods.
Victor's life was marked by his commitment to his family, his patients, and his faith, leaving a lasting impact on everyone he encountered. He will be profoundly missed by his family, friends, and community but his legacy will live on in all that knew him. He lived to live again.
