On January 16, 1931, E. Jane Hackney was born to George S. Hackney and Eleanor K. [Kercherval] Hackney in Cleveland, Ohio. Jane attended Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Elementary School in Cleveland. While attending St. Rita’s High School in Kansas City, Jane discovered her oratory gifts, became skillful, shared her talents and encouraged others to develop their gifts and talents. After graduating at seventeen years old she worked in the health care profession and retail. Jane also worked at Karamu House with the Pre-School program.
Jane met Edward Skinner, their love grew; they were married for forty-three years raising Deborrah and Edward George.
Bea, a good friend, invited Jane to lunch and introduced her to an Avon executive. The lunch went so well that she joined the Avon team and there she flourished. Jane retired after twenty-five years for Avon where she received many awards including national and international trips which she loved.
Jane had may loves; traveling with her family and friends nationally and internationally, establishing the Maria Stein annual retreat; participating in programs with her church family – feeding the homeless, working with the youth ministry, church lecturer, participating in reading programs; planning festivals and flea markets, and creating works of art. She was bitten by the theater bug at an early age. Not only did she enjoy going to the theater she made her on-stage acting debut in 2011 as Mrs. Olive Burke in an adaptation of Goodwill Toward Women. Her portrayal as May, a woman on death row, stole the show in, The Row.
Jane was a proud member of the Friendship Force; the Continental International Travel Club; Saint Adalbert’s Senior Autumn Club, Altar and Rosary Club and the Maiden Voyage Theater.
