Edgar Mills Obituary

Calling hours (10 people at a  time) Wednesday, April 1, 2020 at 10:00 am to 11:00 am at the Chapel of White's Funeral and Cremation Services

Edgar Paul Mills Jr. was born February 14, 1937 in Thorpe, WV. He was the second oldest child in the union of Paul & Ethel Mills. He went home to be with our Lord Jesus on Wednesday, March 25, 2020 due to traumatic injuries from a fall on Thursday, March 19, 2020. Edgar graduated from Gary District High School in 1955, and immediately enlisted in the United States Air Force.

He served in the U.S. Air Force for 23-years, retiring as a TSgt to Columbus, OH. Edgar was very proud of his Military Career and especially the fact that it gave him the opportunity to meet and marry the love of his life – Florence Marie Campbell – whom he met while stationed at Laughlin Air Force Base in Del Rio, TX. He enjoyed seeing the world and experiencing different people and different cultures. He was proud that he raised four children - Teresa, Regina, Stewart, and Vicki - to have the same appreciation for people being essentially the same, regardless of where they were from, what language they spoke, or how they looked. Edgar’s deployments included: Basic Training in 1955 at Sampson AFB, Geneva, NY; Keeler AFB in Biloxi, MS (1955); Pine Castle AFB, Orlando FL (1956); Laughlin AFB, Del Rio, TX (1958); Sorenstam AFB, Greenland (1960); Wright-Patterson AFB, Dayton, OH (1961); Lackland AFB, San Antonio, TX (1966); Trang Na, Nghe Tinh,Vietnam (1968); Westover AFB, Chicopee, MA (1970); Kadena AFB, Okinawa Japan (1973); and Dyess AFB, Abilene, TX (1976), retiring there in 1978.

As a civilian, Edgar moved his wife Florence Marie and minor children still in the household Stewart and Vicki to Columbus, Oh so that they could be close to his relatives that relocated there from West Virginia. Edgar worked at Federal Glass (1 year), and at Evangel Christian Academy (6 years) before going to DSCC (Department of Defense), retiring from there in 2008 after 21 years.

Everyone that knows Edgar knows that he was incredibly proud of his family. He loved his wife and seeing the accomplishments and incredible people that their children and grandchildren had achieved and become. He was also proud to be a long-time member of Abundant Faith Church of God, under the leadership of Bishop Charles E, and Pastor E. Jean Brown. Besides family, his faith, and church life - sports, cooking, and fishing were also big parts of Edgar’s life. He was in charge of and oversaw all of the food service (both mess halls and NCO clubs) on multiple bases concurrently, established and managed the food service program for our church’s K – 12th grade school in the 1980s, and catered many functions, from weddings to proms and other banquets. His ribs, lasagna, and enchiladas are legendary! He was very athletic even into his seventies, with a long history of playing basketball on military teams; baseball & softball on church teams, and even coaching high school basketball for Evangel Christian Academy for 3-years. However Golf was his favorite and he was active in several golf leagues with his long-time friend Bob Ogletree, and golfing with his son, grandsons, brother, and cousins.

Edgar will be missed for his hilarious sense of humor, true-life storytelling, always dressing “to the nines” with his suits and matching hats that coordinately perfectly with his wife Marie’s outfits, and enjoying great meals with family and friends.

Edgar is predeceased by his Parents Paul & Ethel Mills, his brothers George Earl and Jimmy Mills, and sisters Juanita Craft and Jennie Wilson. He is survived by his wife of 60+ years Florence Marie (Campbell) Mills, daughters Teresa (Morris) Exum, Regina (Lynn) Walter, Vicki Mills, son Stewart (Stephanie) Mills, 9 grand-children, 7 great grand-children, 2 brothers Harold (Doris) Mills, Maurice (Renee) Mills, Brother-in-law Rudolph Wilson, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
