Family will receive friends Friday June 6, 2025 at 9:00 a.m. until time of service at 10:00 a.m. at White's Funeral and Cremation Service. Interment: Greenlawn Cemetery.
In the early hours of Friday, May 23, 2025, Elizabeth Martha Van Cleaf - affectionately known as “Betty” - went on to paradise with the Lord. She is survived by her four children, many grandchildren, and great-grandchildren: Rodney Lee Van Cleaf (4 children), Vanessa Young (3 children), Vesta Van Cleaf (2 children), and William LeRoy “Butch” Van Cleaf IV (1 child). Elizabeth’s oldest daughter, Valerie Irene Van Cleaf, preceded her in death in 2020. Valerie and Elizabeth are survived by Valerie’s six children.
Born on March 24, 1932, Elizabeth was the seventh child and only girl born to Joseph and Minnie Johnson. Minnie passed away due to complications during childbirth, and Elizabeth was lovingly raised in Columbus, Ohio, by her six older brothers and her Aunt Odessa.
Elizabeth graduated from Central High School and later married William LeRoy Van Cleaf III. Together, they raised their family in the Shepard neighborhood. A devout Catholic, Elizabeth leaned on her faith to navigate life’s challenges. She found joy in going to church, singing in the choir, reading, cooking, crocheting, line dancing with the Columbus Steppers, and sharing "girl time" with her dear friends - especially her longest and dearest friend, Bonnie Evans.
Over the years, Elizabeth held a variety of jobs, from cook at the Red Door Tavern to serving as a Discover Card service representative for 15 years.
In her later years, Elizabeth was honored as the oldest person living in Shepard for 70+ years and remained there in her final days. She faced health challenges with the heart of a true warrior. Even in difficult moments, she found joy - whether through her love of flowers, watching Westerns, or simply spending time with family. Her life was full in its simplicity and beauty.
Elizabeth leaves behind a legacy of true strength. We now rejoice in knowing she is at peace.
See you soon, Betty.
