In loving memory of Ella Bell Gortman, daughter of the late Willie and Lugena Verda Williams, was born on August 26, 1940, in Batesburg, South Carolina, and departed this earthly life on January 30, 2026, and entered into her life of eternal rest.

She was educated at Batesburg-Leesville Elementary and High School. Ella attended Emanuel Baptist Church in Elmont L.I., New York, and sang in the choir. Later, she joined Bethany Baptist Church on September 24, 2017. She was a devoted member of the Bible Study.

Ella was a woman of rare grace and a truly loving heart. She spent her career as a dedicated domestic worker. In her spare time, she enjoyed working on puzzle books that challenged her mind. Beyond her own home, she was a pillar of support who cared deeply for her children and many other family members, extending her warmth to anyone in need. She possessed the gift of listening without judgment and offering a brand of comfort that made the hardest days feel manageable.

Mom was our moral compass, always honest, always kind, and always there to catch us when we fell. She was the heart of our home, providing the steady presence and unconditional love that shaped who we are today. We will carry the warmth she cultivated in our hearts forever.

She leaves to cherish her memory: Six children, Arlette Hagans, Mary Ann Gortman, Johnnie (Lorraine) Gortman, Jr., Thomas (Barbara) Gortman Sr., Denise Gortman, and James (Letricia) Gortman of Long Island, New York. Her siblings Myra Jackson, David (Kim) Williams, Major (Barbara) Williams, Issac (late Marion)

Williams, Harry (Eva) Williams, 19 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends.

Preceded in death by parents Willie and Lugena Verda Williams, her brother Wilson Williams, brother Walter Williams and his wife Annie, brother Marion and his wife Flo, and brother Jacob Williams and wife Janice.
