Gilbert P. Thomas

THOMAS, Gilbert P, age 59, of Columbus, Ohio, went to be with the Lord surrounded by his family at Mount Carmel East Hospital on September 23, 2023. 

Gil was born in Ankara, Turkey on February 19, 1964 to the late Gilbert R. and Maureen V. Thomas. He matriculated through the Columbus Public Schools where he attended Columbus South High School.

Following in the footsteps of his father, Thomas launched his career in the construction industry with Local 18. After graduation from the apprenticeship program in 2000 – his career formally began. Over the course of his career he worked for many contractors out of Local 18’s hiring hall: Lionel Construction, E.S. Wagner and Complete General, to name a few. Gil operated the following machines: the scraper, the loader, the skid steer, asphalt breakdown, finish roller and the dozer. 

He loved spending time with his family and engaging in many recreational activities. During his younger years, he loved playing tennis, pingpong, basketball and going to the skating rink with his siblings. Into adulthood he found joy in swimming, throwing horseshoes, cornhole, shooting pool, throwing darts and golfing “Putt Putt”. He was also fond of playing cards, dominos and rummikub.  He thoroughly enjoyed watching sports, especially his favorite teams, the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Philadelphia Eagles. Gil loved cars and always kept a clean Cadillac. 

He is preceded in death by his parents Gilbert R. and Maureen V. Thomas; parents-in-law Douglas Sr. and Betty Edmondson; paternal grandparents Gilbert and Ruby Thomas and maternal grandparents Paul and Vera McCoy aunts; Pauline A. Austin, Barbara Thomas and John (Roberta) Thomas.

Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 33 years Donna Lisa (Edmondson) Thomas; sons Jovan (Amber) Svarda and Trey (Sherita) Thomas; sisters Felicia (Lewis) Gibson, Sania “Go-Go” Thomas, Melissa (Rickey) Dudley and brother Christopher Thomas; brother-in-laws Douglas Edmondson, Jr. and Dudley (Nancy) Edmondson; grandchildren Marquise and Amiah Svarda-Loring, Deuce Sparks, Dominic Svarda and Treyce O. Thomas; nieces Miyaka and Kennedy Thomas; nephews Stevie (Chantelle) Thomas, Carlos and Ari Toles, Lewis Gibson, Kobe Thomas, Dallas and Dyson Dudley and Jordan Thomas; great nieces Londyn and Trinity Thomas; great nephews Stephen and Jaden Thomas; uncles; Tony (Michelle) “Happy” and Gary Thomas; close cousins Jon Jon, Chad and Micah Thomas and Donnie Youngblood; special friends Ronald “Runchie” Hill, David Carroll, Brent Butcher, Larry Williams, Rome Burbridge, Billy Parker and a host of extended relatives and friends.
