Gladys Bell Henderson (nee Medley) was born December 4,1923 to Henry Preston Medley and Carrie Medley (Love) in Medina, Ohio. After the death of her mother, Henry married Lucia Medley (Barksdale) who raised Gladys and her six siblings. Gladys' father was an Associate Pastor at the Second Baptist Church, Medina, Ohio. Gladys accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age. This led her to a life long relationship with the Lord. Gladys was trained as a classical pianist. When she was 12, she began playing for the church. Music played a major part in her life, lives of her siblings, and later, the lives of her children.
After graduating from high school, (top 10% of her class), she moved to Dayton, Ohio and began to work at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, where she met Thomas Vernon Jones. They were married shortly after and had three children; Gary (deceased), Gayle and Gloria. They chose to raise the children in Medina.
Gladys worked for the Navy Department in Cleveland, Ohio before landing a job at the Medina Community Hospital, where she worked for nearly 20 years.
Gladys enjoyed speaking Spanish and was familiar with Latin. Both would work to serve her as she pursued a career in health care, and later took missionary trips. She traveled to Puerto Rico and Zimbabwe.
Gladys and Thomas hosted the founding of Fellowship Baptist Church in their home. As the church grew, they began meeting at the home of Sammy and Elsie Henderson. After out growing the Henderson’s, the church met in the fellowship hall of the Congregational Church on S. Court St, Medina, Ohio.
In 1962, Fellowship Baptist Church was built at 901 W. Liberty Street, Medina, Ohio. Gladys enjoyed many years of ministry there where she played the piano and taught the senior high school age Sunday school class.
Following her previous marriage, Gladys was united in holy matrimony to childhood acquaintance, Fox Howard Henderson. With this union, Gladys was given the awesome opportunity to mother and raise Chris and Felicia. Fox and Gladys were married for 18 years before his passing.
Gladys taught Bible Study in their house for many years. She founded an intercessory prayer and evangelistic ministry called 'Mountain Movers'. She ministered to many, many people. Her love for the Lord and His Word, led her to attend Zoe Bible College where she obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Theology; she was 68 years old and would say, "it's never too late!"
At the age of 77, Gladys moved to Columbus, Ohio, where she began attending Flintridge Baptist Church. Minister Henderson became an intricate part of the church and gained a wonderful church family. Minister Henderson continued her worked for God there at the church. She taught Bible Study, was a member of the Pastoral Staff and led Women Ministry.
Gladys was blessed with six grandchildren; and three great grandchildren whom she loved with all her heart, and they her. The oldest, Boston, attempting to say grandmother, began to call her 'Momber', and Momber she remained; even non relatives called her Momber. She devoted her life to interceding for her children and grandchildren. They relished her prayers and were amazed when the answer came shortly thereafter. She truly was a prayer warrior.
On January 10, 2025, Gladys transitioned into eternal peace with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. In addition to her parents and husband Fox, she was preceded in death by son Gary.
She is survived by children; Gayle (Robert) Johnson, Gloria Livingston, Chris Henderson and Felicia Burney. Grandchildren; Boston Jones, Cierra (Matthew Barnes) Johnson, Brook Livingston, Brianna Livingston, Whitney (Chris) Bonner, Angelica Johnson, great grandchildren; Savanna, Kyla and Kendall.
Gladys leaves many nieces, nephews, and extended family to cherish her life and the impact she made on them. She had special friends; Dr. Brinca Hunter, Diane and Lou Galmarini, many other loved ones, church family and friends.
Gladys' life and legacy will be treasured by all the many lives she touched.
