Lawrence Fowlkes, affectionately known as “Mr. Fowlkes, Lo and pawpaw” went to home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, May 14, 2024. He made his transition peacefully at the Capri Gardens Nursing Home located in Delaware Ohio just shortly after celebrating his 68th birthday.
Lawrence as born on May 9, 1956 and is preceded in death by his father Douglas Fowlkes Sr., brothers William Fowlkes and David Fowlkes. He is survived by his mother Mozell (Woods) Fowlkes, loving wife and caregiver Jerri K Jackson-Fowlkes. Children Sessely, Kimyona, Lawrence Jr., Jasmine, Leighton (Angie) Smith and Jhamerra (DeAngelo) Tatum, brothers Douglas Fowlkes, Ronnie Fowlkes, Larry Fowlkes, Dennis (Jan) Fowlkes and Duane Fowlkes. Grandchildren Kar’monn and Kinqua Glover, Lawrence Fowlkes Jr., Lavont Fowlkes, Analiera Fowlkes, Laniyah Smith, Jaylen Smith, Genesis Smith, DeAngelo “DJ” Tatum Jr. as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many special friends,
Lawrence was born in Columbus Ohio and attended East High School. He met the love of his life, Jerri, in 1990 while working on her car. They tied the knot on September 16, 2000. He held various jobs before his health began to declined and he was forced to retire at an early age. Lawrence worked as a mechanic and an overall handy man. We discovered his best time while working was being a caregiver for adults living with developmental disabilities. He was loved by his clients as well as fellow staff members, especially when he was in the kitchen cooking. He received salvation and was a very active member at Hosack Street Baptist Church until his health stopped his physical activities. He really loved working the youth of the church alongside with his wife.
While Lawrence suffered from many ailments he received the gift of life when he received a Kidney Transplant in 2015. When asked “how are you feeling today” he would always respond “I’m doing just fine”. It seemed that no matter what life dealt him he was able to overcome it. The family often joked with Lawrence that he would outlive everyone. God, knowing best, decided to upgrade his home, and called him to Gory.
We may never know one’s journey, trials and tribulations, or setbacks but Lawrence met his challenges head on never complaining, feeling sad or sorry for himself. He went with the flow with his strong support base who loved him dearly. His ability to deal with his health situation and keep on pushing should be one that we emulate.
Take your rest sir, until we meet again.
