Lewis James Joel Flemister was born on August 24, 1940 in Chattanooga, Tennessee to Rev. Lewis James Flemister and Artilla Patrick Flemister. His family moved to Harrisburg, Illinois, where he received his primary education before moving to Columbus, Ohio. Lewis is a proud Central High School graduate and attended The Ohio State University. .
Lewis accepted Christ at an early age and was a member of Trinity Baptist Church for 60 years. He was a devoted member and served diligently as a former member of the Trustee Board, Finance Ministry, Brother Power Ministry, Sunday church school and multiple church choirs. Lewis retired from the City of Columbus Department of Public Utilities in 2003 after 33 years of dedicated service. He served as Dispatcher where his deep baritone voice was often heard as he gave instruction to others.
Lewis was an avid sports fan, often watching basketball, football and track & field. He loved the Ohio State Buckeyes and the San Antonio Spurs. He also loved to travel and spent a lot of time visiting family & friends in Florida, Georgia, Michigan, Tennessee and Illinois. Jamaica was like his second home.
On Friday, July 23, 2021, Lewis was called home and received in the arms of our Lord and savior. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis and Artilla; mother and father-in-law Robert and Clarice Dawkins; niece Cynthia Russell and nephews Harrison Barrett & Robert Morrison.
He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Joan Dawkins Flemister; daughter Cerina Flemister; son Lewis Joel Flemister (Toski); grandchildren, LaShayl Flemister, KaRayl Flemister, Tatum Flemister and Michael Smith; sisters, Lois Barrett, Caroline Simmons (Rev. Anthony) and Christine Smith; brother-in-laws Claude Dawkins (Sheila) and Winston Dawkins; sister-in-laws Vivine Hollar, Judith Hart and Beverly Morrison (Keith); special friends Rev. Thomas and Inez Toney; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other family members and friends. He was “Dad Flemister” to many.
