Martha Marie Rose Wickliffe was born February 15, 1925 in Hilltop, West Virginia to Harry Bernard Rose and Martha Marie Rose (nee Bryant). She was raised with her six brothers and two sisters. She graduated from DuBois High School in 1943 and briefly attended West Virginia State University. In 1950 she married Edward V. Wickliffe, Sr. and moved to Columbus, Ohio, where they began their family, aka the “four little darlings”.
In 1964 she was one of the first employees of the Head Start program at St. Peter’s Catholic Church. She retired from John XXIII Head Start after 32 years of employment. She was a faithful member of Columbus Metropolitan Area Community Action Organization, the Parent Teacher Association, and an avid bowler.
She joined Centenary United Methodist Church in the 1950’s. During her time at CUMC she served on various boards and committees; Centenary Housing Committee, the Usher Board- where she once served as president, coordinator of the United Methodist Youth Fellowship, assisted with the Nurturing ministry, long serving food pantry volunteer, and the unofficial back pew patrol for rowdy youth. No matter the place, she was also the quintessential social butterfly.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her stepfather Daddy Boone, her husband Edward Sr., and her 11 brothers & sisters. She leaves to cherish her memory her four children; Edward V. Jr. “Butch”, Marsha, Gehri (Jeanne), and Raymond; eleven grandchildren – Robert (Sara), James (Melissa), Sehri, Bryan, Jourdan, Saraai, Deontray, Rayshawna, Rayonah, and Ray Wickliffe, and John Berry; nine great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
In her words, “take God with you.”
