Melvin Stevens, Jr. Obituary

Family will receive friends on Tuesday, February 13, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. until time of service at 11:00 a.m. at Bethel A.M.E. Church, 2021 Cleveland Avenue, Columbus, OH 43211. Interment: Glen Rest Memorial Estate.

Melvin Nathaniel Stevens Jr, affectionately known as “Tanny” was born May 9, 1959, in Columbus Ohio. He was the 6th child and the only boy of 8 children born to Margaret (Fair) Stevens and Melvin Stevens Sr.

Our beloved Melvin transitioned to “Heaven, The Land of Pure Delight” on Wednesday January 24, 2024. He returned home only for GOD to take him home. GOD saw that Melvin was tired; a “Good Tired”, so He wrapped HIS arms around him and took him home. Melvin completed all of GOD’s Assignments with Excellence. Renee eloquently expressed, “Momma now has her only son back in her arms.” “Oh, What A Blessing!”

Melvin attended Ohio Avenue Elementary, Mohawk Junior High, Franklin Junior High and was a proud 1977 graduate of the “Mighty East High Tigers.” During his elementary years, Tanny was an avid sports enthusiast, particularly football and basketball. He played several defensive positions while playing for the Mohawk Raiders.  As the only boy, one would always see him on the basketball courts as he thought that he was indeed Walt “Clyde” Frazier and Julius Erving (Doctor J). After graduating from East High School, Melvin worked at Ohio Packing and soon realized that he wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps as a Painter. Soon, Father and Son started working together as Self Employed Painters. Later, Melvin learned the Dry Wall profession which led to additional skills associated with the overall Home Renovation Project. It was during this time, his good friend Eddie Tate and colleagues started calling him “Doc.”

Melvin believed that his dad was one of the best Bass singers. As he grew older, Melvin started mimicking his dad as well as believing that he was Joe Ligon of the Mighty Clouds of Joy, Clyde  Jeter of the Swan Silverstones, Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions, and any one of the singers of the Temptations just to name a few. Melvin was a Joyful person who was full of Love, Life, and Laughter. He was indeed a happy person who loved and respected his Family because his Family and others loved and respected him. Melvin’s Life, Love, Laughter and Legacy will continue to reign.

Melvin is preceded in death by his Parents; Margaret and Melvin Stevens Sr, Brother-n-law Cecil Carpenter Sr, Nephew Cecil Carpenter Jr, Brother Terry Locke, Family Members, and Friends.

Melvin leaves to cherish is Life, Love, Laughter, and Legacy, his Wife Evette Scurry, loving daughters Ateva Stevens and Grandson General Smith aka “Baby Tanny”, Alicia Dukes, Son Isaiah Cook, Special Grandson Nysean Pollard and all of his Grandchildren, Sisters Paulette (Larry) Stevens, Annette (Frank) Nowlin, Rochelle (Tony) Stevens-Coston, Barbara (Cecil) Carpenter, Dorothy (Duncan) Fair, Melissa (Ron and Oakley) Stevens, Renee (David) Carpenter, and a Host of Nieces, Nephews, Cousins and Aunt.
