The Obituary

“Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.” Psalms 116:15

Melvin Louis Shipp, the son of the late Captain Cleveland “Cleve” Shipp and Pearl Meaders, was born February 24, 1931 in Water Valley, Mississippi. He was the oldest son of seven children. His sisters, Jimmie Lou and Dorothy Mae, and brothers, Daniel Lee, Leonard, and Robert, all preceded him in death. His two children, Melvin Jr. and Rosalyn also preceded him in death.

He left Water Valley, Mississippi as a child and his family lived for a time in Harlan, Kentucky where he was educated and graduated from Rosenwald High School in 1947 as number one in his class and voted “Most Dignified”. Melvin attended Columbus State Community College, and he was a proud veteran of the United States Army. He loved sharing stories and reminiscing about his time serving in the army. Melvin worked at DCSC and worked for COTA as a bus driver. Melvin also worked many years for the City of Columbus, Department of Engineering and Construction as an inspector before retiring in 2002.

He accepted the Lord Jesus as his Savior and served faithfully at the Church of Christ of the Apostolic Faith as an ordained Elder, President of the Brotherhood, Deacon, and Sunday School teacher. He was passionate about seeking God and teaching the truth. He enjoyed traveling, reading, and studying the Bible. Melvin was best known for his vibrant personality and for uplifting others with his infectious smile. He never met a stranger and always had kind words and good conversation for all. He always shared his favorite Scripture, 1 Peter 1:16 “Be ye holy, for I am holy.”

Blessed with 89 years of life, Melvin leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife Shirley; daughters, Denise Leslie, and Sonya; sons, Anthony, and Timothy; stepdaughter, Pamela (John); stepsons, Alfred, Daryl, Juan (Robin), and Terry; sister, Betty; and, a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends.
