Merzell McGhee Obituary

Calling Hours (only 10 at a time), Saturday, October 24, 2020 from 12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m. at White's Funeral Home Chapel. The family will not be present during calling hours and masks are required. Private Family Service (50 maximum) at 1:00 p.m. The family will receive flowers at the funeral home.

Merzell McGhee entered into eternal rest October 18, 2020.

Ms. Merzell McGhee was born November 16, 1925 in Luverne, Alabama to Obie and Ida Gertrude McGhee. She attended Crenshaw County Public Schools.

She was a lifelong member of St. Paul AME Church Columbus where she served in the capacity of president of the Senior Usher Board and the Junior Usher Board. Over the years she served in other organizations and projects at St. Paul such as So-Re-Lit Club and chaired a Women’s Day. On the Ohio Conference Level, Ms. McGhee was selected Life member of the Women’s Missionary Society and served as Chair of the Nominating Committee. She served as president, Worship Leader and treasurer for St. Paul’s Helen M. Paxton Women’s Missionary Society.

After her term (eight years) as president expired, the society established a scholarship fund named for her. Ms. McGhee was a faithful Class Leader and a member of the Altar Flowers Ministry which distributes the flowers to shut-ins every Sunday. She never failed to visit members who were hospitalized and sent cards and visited shut-ins sometimes carrying them her famous rolls. For many years she attended General Conferences and the Women’s Missionary Society Quadrennial which were held in various cities.

Ms. McGhee was a foster parent and also a parent figure to many children who have grown up in St. Paul.

She was predeceased by sisters Ozell McGhee and Olean Bodiford and brother Lonnie McGhee.

She is survived by daughters Tia Von Bins, Gwendolyn Carol Moore, Patricia Lacy, Dolores Burks (Johnny), Sandy Newton, Lillian Slack (James). Grandchildren Melvin Richard Hill (Tammy), Mark Morgan (Patricia), Denise Morgan, Elmera Willis (Steve), Christine Kidd (Romel), Lin Fen Gray (Douglas), Christine Lacy and a host of great grandchildren. Nieces Charline Bodiford, Diane Bodiford, Geneva Embry; nephews Tommie Bodiford, Andrew Bodiford, (Gloria) and a host of great nieces, nephews, church family and friends including special friends Nancy Thomas and Becky Holliman.
