“But God will redeem my life from the grave; he will surely take me to himself.” - Psalm 49:15
Michael S. Powell, aged 78, was born in Columbus, Ohio, on May 20, 1947. He passed away peacefully on September 21st at Ohio Health Pickerington Methodist Hospital. Mike was a meek and quiet man who accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his savior in his heart before becoming very ill. He loved his family dearly and often spoke of them, with his grandchildren being the pride and joy of his days.
Mike enlisted in the Army and served his tour in Vietnam from 1962-66 as part of the 101st Airborne, also known as the Screaming Eagles. He re-enlisted a second time to be with his two brothers. Mike enjoyed fishing and taught his son how to fish using a stick and some string. He attended Columbus Tech and earned a degree in alcohol and drug counseling. A hardworking family man, Mike worked for 26 years for the City of Columbus as an Alcohol Control Officer, where he helped those in need by taking them to a place of safety. In 1996, the city merged with Netcare, and Mike became a Reach-Out Worker, continuing his mission to keep the homeless off the streets and rescue those in need. Mike retired from Netcare in 2010. He was a tenacious and adventurous man who loved life and traveling with his wife.
He is preceded in death by his parents, James Powell and Evelyn Office (Powell); his daughter, Tohana Hamilton; his sisters, Shirley Scott, Carmella Fagan, and Janice Powell; and his brothers, Donald Judge Sr., Ray, Victor, and Larry (Patricia) Powell. Michael leaves to cherish his memories his loving wife, Janice Powell; his daughters, Shanikka Gibson, Melody (Kevin) Black-Langston, and Jada Cochran; his sons, Thomas and Willie Gibson, Michael Jr., Brian, Damon (Latoya) Powell, and Brian Frazier; his sisters, Gloria and Toni Powell; his brother, Kim Powell; his sister in law Martha Cox, Sharon, Rita, and Kathy Gibson; his brother in law Dana and Lewis (Felicia) Gibson; 30 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Marriage is Forever
I take you
From this day forward.
To love and to miss.
For better or for worse.
For emptiness or joyful memory,
In sadness and in grief,
Even after death has made us part.
I take you as my husband
In death as I did in life,
Because our love is Forever.
I love you, Michael Powell.
