Orlando Gaines Sr.

Family will receive friends on Thursday, October 5, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. until time of service at 11:00 p.m. at White's Funeral and Cremation Services at 867 S. James Rd. Columbus, OH 43227. Interment: Dayton National Cemetery. 

Orlando Gaines Sr. was born in Springfield, Ohio on Monday, April 05, 1954 to Norma Jean Gaines and James Gaines. He came to Columbus, Ohio at the age of 6 years old and attended school here until graduating from Columbus East High.  While attending East High, he participated on the track team and was a stage crew team member and received numerous awards and letters. He joined the marine reserves corps after his graduation.

Orlando married while in the marine reserves corps to his ex-wife Venita Thorogood and was blessed with two sons Orlando Jr and Michael.  While serving in the marine reserves corps, he received 8 awards, 2 National Defense Service Medals, 3 Letters of Appreciation, 5 Good Conduct Medals and many ribbons and certificates. Orlando made a career as a Personnel/Administrative Chief for 11 year and 11 months while serving in the marines. He retired after 23 years of service.

He joined “Redeemers Faith Believers” church to strengthen his faith and to rebuild his life to be a better person for himself. He later became a deacon of the church so he could help others in their journey to become stronger believers of their faith.

Orlando was preceded in death by his brothers, Daryl Sherrills and Thomas (Lindsey) Sherrills Jr.   

Orlando is survived by the following: Sons: Orlando Gaines Jr., Michael (Elisa) Gaines, Shon (Darci) Swan, Xavier (Asia) Speights and Daughter Sequoia (Alberto) Brown-Rocha.

His Brothers: Vonley Gaines, Victor (Cynthia) Gaines. Sisters: Denise Gaines, Antionette Sherrills and Yolanda Sherrills-Webb. He also leaves with many grandchildren and great grandchildren along with a host of relatives and friends.
