Rickie Austin Obituary

Rickie Austin, father, son, brother, G-Pop, uncle, and friend, was born July 12, 1950 in Toledo, OH to William and Ida Bell Austin. As the second-oldest of six children, and the first-born son, Rickie enjoyed opportunities to break barriers (and rules!) and demonstrate leadership. For example, Rickie was a standout football player at Marion Franklin high school in Columbus, OH, which afforded him the opportunity to attend and play collegiate football at Kent State University. With a natural gift of charisma, gab, and persuasion, Rickie combined his natural leadership and his Kent State education to establish and propel a career in the telecommunications industry. As a high-achieving professional, Rickie’s career took him to many states, earned him many titles, and connected him with many new friends. These experiences invigorated Rickie’s zest for travel and connection.

An endlessly devoted father, Rickie relished opportunities to include his two sons, Cerick Julian Austin Sr. and Carmen Jamel Austin, in any and all excursions. Some of their most memorable trips include New Orleans, Toronto, Atlanta, Disney, Mississippi, and more. Always the present father, Rickie was intentional about encapsulating and preserving these memories via countless photos. In addition to work and personal travel, Rickie was a strong advocate for family gatherings and reunions. Rickie made sure to attend as many reunions of the Kimmons, Murphy, and Austin families as he could over the years. At these events, family members always appreciated and looked forward to Rickie’s ability to storytell historical family information, document family history, and connect genealogical roots. Rickie’s memory was a welcome family time capsule that all who knew him loved to crack open.

To know Rickie was to also know his family. Rickie always beamed with pride as he talked about his children: Cerick Julian Austin Sr., born in 1979; Carmen Jamel Austin, born in 1981; and Whitley White, born in 1988. Through his children, his heart expanded seven times larger as he was blessed to love seven grandchildren. Rickie was a devoted grandfather, affectionately known as “G-Pop,” and unapologetically guilty of being the grandparent who could never say “no.”

When he wasn’t traveling or talking to family and friends, Rickie enjoyed Western movies, building computers, reading, tinkering with electronics, deep-diving into family genealogy, playing and growing his collection of jazz music, and watching sports—his favorite teams being the LA Lakers and the Cleveland Browns.

Rickie will be remembered as fiercely independent, a proud father and grandfather, and a stranger to none. He is preceded in death by his parents, William and Ida Bell Austin, and his sister, Sheila Austin. Left to mourn his passing are his brothers, William (Jr.) Austin and Brian Austin; two sisters, Linda Elliot and Denise Austin; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Honored to carry his legacy, are his children, Cerick (Kristin) Austin, Carmen (Alicia) Austin, and Whitley White; as well as his seven grandchildren, Cerick Austin II, Camryn Austin, Callen Austin, Tyree Silmon, Taniya Silmon, Antwan Sims, and Atana Sims. The family appreciates all of the prayers, support, and condolences at this incredibly painful time.
