Roberta Davis Chapman, age 90, of Columbus, Ohio, passed away on Saturday, August 12, 2023. She was born in Goldsboro, North Carolina, to Ella B. McLaurin of Youngstown, Ohio. Her Father is unknown. Both parents preceded her in death.
She fell in love with Reverend Henry Douglas Chapman in the early sixties. They were married for over fifty years until his passing in May 2000.
She received Salvation at an early age and Baptism in Jesus' name with the infilling of the Holy Spirit in Goldsboro, North Carolina, where she was a member of Holy Ghost Headquarters in Goldsboro under the leadership of the late Bishop S.E. Sanders. She revealed to her son Ronn that she was called into the ministry many years ago. But she never accepted the calling publicly due to her church's belief regarding women preachers. Ronn and First Lady Yolanda got the call to serve as Pastor at the Church of God & True Holiness on Warren Avenue in Youngstown, where Mother Chapman served under Ronn's leadership.
Her dream was to be a mother, and it appeared that plan would not become a reality until Mother Sylvia anointed her with oil and laid hands on her, and God favored her with two sons.
One of Mother Chapman's favorite pastimes was singing. She would often bring the house down in church, singing "Sweeping Through the City" by Shirley Caesar while her son Henry (affectionately known as Doug) was "killin' it" on the bass guitar. You would often find her cooking "she could burn." You could also see her sitting on the front porch drinking a cold Pepsi, talking to her family, and looking out for the neighborhood children.
She leaves to cherish her memory two sons, Henry D. Chapman Jr. (Kimberly) and Ronn L. Chapman (Yolanda), both of Columbus, Ohio; grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
Her siblings preceded her in death: Alonzo Davis and Annie Mae Belton of Youngstown, Ohio, Lilly Mae McLaurin and Gladys Moody of Goldsboro, North Carolina, and many others unknown. Additionally, her grandson Henry D. Chapman I, preceded her in death at birth.
