Family will receive friends Friday 11/29/2024 at 11:00 a.m. until the time of service 12:00 p.m. at White's Funeral and Cremation Services, 867 S. James Rd. Columbus, OH 43227. Interment: Greenlawn Cemetery.

Stanley C. Assing was born on July 10th, 1938, in Somerset, Bermuda, to the parents of Mary Elizabeth and Hugh Assing, who both preceded him in death along with his brother Michael Simmons. Stanley peacefully went home to be with the Lord on November 9th, 2024.

Born and raised in Somerset, Bermuda, Stanley received his education from Bermuda’s West End School system. Known for his quick wit, forward-thinking and strong work ethic, as a young boy, Stanley worked as a waiter at some of Bermuda’s best high-end Hotels. Stanley, a natural hard worker, often held multiple jobs simultaneously, including working for the Bermuda Gas and Electric Company. As a young man, Stanley served in Bermuda’s British Army. With thoughts of moving to the USA for better opportunities, he relocated to the States, leaving the job he enjoyed the most as a Diesel Steam Engineer, where he and his crew were tasked with rescuing distressed tourist ships and private yachts.

His Initial relocation to the States was to Harlem, NY where he lived with his first cousin, Pam and worked for a security firm in Brooklyn NY.  After several years in Harlem, Stanley was transferred to Yonkers, New York, at age 31. Moving to Yonkers proved more beneficial as it was not long before Stanley found new employment with Westchester County, a New York State government agency. During this time, he also met and married his wife, Celestine Williams Assing, a resident and native of Yonkers, NY, who a major corporation employed. Stanley was loved wholeheartedly, by Celestine’s close-knit family, which consisted of her mother, father (now deceased), ten siblings, nephews and nieces.

Stanley, a man of many natural-born talents, was a skilled chef who received his training from a culinary school in England, (United Kingdom).  He and his wife, Celestine, often enjoyed entertaining and would host many special events for family and friends. With a love for family, it was not unusual for them to have guests from Bermuda or his family visiting or living at Stanley and Celestine’s home. For many years, his long-time friend, (now deceased) Captain Donny Smith and the diesel steam crew would often travel to Yonkers, NY, to vacation with the Assing’s and do their Holiday shopping for their families. Known for his outspoken nature, and tough exterior, Stanley had a kind, generous heart and philanthropic spirit. With a heart for the sick and the less fortunate, Stanley routinely donated to numerous charitable organizations such as St Jude and the Wounded Veterans.  He frequently gave to those in need, his family, friends, and homeless strangers, even if it meant giving his last dollar.

With ongoing health concerns, Stanley retired in 1999 from the Westchester County Government after 24 years of service. After enduring years of declining health, Stanley learned of a better healthcare system in Columbus, Ohio.  He consulted with his wife, who retired from her dream job to provide around-the-clock care for him, and they both decided he should try the OSU Hospital system for his health needs.  Therefore, Stanley, escorted by his favorite brother-in-law, Booker T. Williams, Jr. (Celestine’s younger brother), flew from Yonkers, NY, to Columbus, Ohio, so he could seek treatment at the OSU Hospital system.  After some time, while in Ohio, Stanley’s health began to show some signs of improvement; however, diabetes prevailed.

Stanley is survived by his wife, Celestine Assing, and his five adult children from Bermuda Carlita Assing, Archibald Assing, Stanley Assing, Maxwell Assing, and Wayne Watson. He is also survived by his sisters Rose Marie (Leroy) Burrows and Norma Farrar. Stanley leaves to cherish his memory: his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, Aunt Marie Vickers, cousins and a host of in-laws from his wife, Celestine’s family, who were very fond of him.
