Upon graduation, he enlisted in the Army in 1963, where he served as a paratrooper until his release date. Bobby was deployed in such places as Vietnam, Saigon, Taiwan, and the Dominican Republic. Meantime, Bobby was a Faithful member of the Calvary Tremont Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as chairman of the deacons under three different pastors. Known for his reliability and heart for service, he also acted as the unofficial Repairman for the church. Wherever he saw a need, he was there.

Bobby was an avid semi-pro bowler and baseball player. Bobby was legendary for his Gardening skills. Neighbors came from all over the neighborhood and across Columbus to indulge in his beautiful, sumptuous vegetable garden.
